More Adults Being Diagnosed with ADHD

adhdisme:

Matt - I read this article - one of the few it seems recently that doesn’t have a negative spin on ADHD.   A few things jumped out at me which reminded me of my story.

Johnston said he would be at his computer, reach for the mouse, and forget what he wanted to work on.

“I think that’s something people think, ‘well, that happens to me.’ But that happens to me 12 times a day,” said Johnston.

It was a combination of that very same thing and panic attacks which made me see a doctor in 2003.

Since the disorder decades ago wasn’t as prevalent as it is today, ADHD diagnosis are coming much later in life.

I don’t know if this is awkward wording or not.   I personally don’t feel the disorder isn’t any more prevalent today than it used to be, there’s an additional awareness of it.

At first, he thought he was depressed. He also suffered from severe anxiety. After seeing his doctor and then a psychiatrist, he was diagnosed with his disorder.

I have struggled with mild depression (dysthemia) my whole life, and mild to moderate anxiety my whole life as well.   I feel a lot of people with ADHD struggle with depression and anxiety to a degree - it’s just part of living with an ADHD brain.

“A bad day doesn’t necessarily mean a bad week, a bad morning doesn’t mean a bad day anymore. It’s been colossal,” said Johnston.

I need to remember this.

There is no way I don’t have this.

I’m normally inclined to believe I’m a much more complicated mix of stupid, lazy and depressed but… no this explains my entire academic career, and is much simpler. This has got to be it.

I’ve probably already come to this conclusion in the past and just forgotten. =’D
